I was a procrastinator in my younger years. It was at its peak in college. I was a marketing and communications major and would have massive projects due and wait until two days before starting on them. I am not sure why I ever thought that was a good idea. Here is what have learned along the way and why we can’t wait for the perfect time to do anything.

Sometimes, we must break and reassemble things to create a more effective process or service. When we are too close to something, we often lose perspective. I wrote this blog post over a year ago. I think it holds true now more than ever. People in our industry seem paralyzed. Don’t wait for others to decide your future.

The shaking was so violent that it knocked my eyeglasses off the nightstand across the room. It persisted for about 20 seconds. I had to crawl on my hands and knees to find them in the dark through glass and dirt on the floor. It was 30 years ago, on 1/17/94 at 4:31 am, that we lived through the 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake. Those 20 seconds changed everything. Nothing like a disaster to teach discipline.

Respect has to be earned. And that means going above and beyond to make people listen to us and align with us. It’s easy for leadership to assume we have it handled. But if they don’t fundamentally understand the business and what it takes to secure and keep it, then if things go sideways, we can’t count on them to be in our court.

Relocation professionals don’t have the power to make meaningful changes or contributions surrounding what is happening with NAR, lawsuits, regulatory threats, and a horrible national public perception of the real estate industry. But that doesn’t mean we can’t take action at home on the things we can control.
